- The tool that I chose to use for my Web 2.0 exploration this week was Socrative.com. I found that Socrative really engaged my students vs. the traditional paper and pencil quiz. It allows you to instantly connect with students as learning happens. I really liked using it because it is an online assessment app that can quickly assess students with prepared activities or on-the-spot questions to get immediate insight into student understanding. Teachers can use the auto-populated results to determine the best instructional approach to most effectively drive learning. This week I gave my students a pre-assessment for non-fiction text structures. The quiz itself took about 20 minutes to create. Socrative scored the students answers and compiled the data in a percentage chart. Teachers then can utilize this information to differentiate instruction. I really liked the quick feedback. Student results flash on the teacher’s screen as they respond to the quizzes and questions. This helps the teacher quickly see what is happening and what students are doing at the moment. Socrative offers personalized content, educators can edit and design their own library assessments and can also share it with their personal learning network. The reports come in different formats, and can be good visuals for parents and students as well. Reports can be emailed or can be downloaded or can be saved into Google drive. Compatibility: This app is available in for iOS apps, all web-browsers, Windows app, Android apps, Chrome Apps, Kindle Apps making it reachable for every educational technology settings.
Creating the Socrative was simple, however getting it to launch was a bit tricky. I needed to watch a Youtube tutorial on how to get the students to log into the app using the classroom number. Socrative can be used in many formats. I do recommend utilizing this app, especially for older grades. I plan on using it for exit slips, quick assessments, homework and pre and post tests.
